The Pirate/Mermaid Wedding

When I got married many years ago, I was told, very firmly, that I had no choice in any part of my wedding.  The priest chose the songs.  The priest chose the vows.  He had the ultimate say on every single minute of my wedding.  I was so stressed out and overwhelmed that I never protested.  However, I do remember thinking that I sure wished I could have at least heard one song that I wanted at the beginning of the ceremony.

Which is why the wedding from last weekend meant so much to me.  I have known the bride for many years.  She is an artist whose opinion I value and seek.  So when she asked me to perform her wedding, I jumped at the chance.

She loved mermaids and her intended loved pirates.  I decided that I would put together the best pirate/mermaid wedding I could find.  I searched the internet, I read books, I read numerous vows from pagan and goddess weddings.  Then I found it.  A pirate wedding.

How absolutely cool it was.  In my imagination, I visualized how it could all work out.  How it could reflect their personalities.  So I studied it and then wrote a pirate wedding ceremony for them.

But I knew that there were still people who thought a wedding should follow the rules.  That changing so much about a traditional wedding would be offensive.  I began to doubt the ceremony I wrote.  So when I met with the couple to present their ceremony to them, I also brought 2 other ceremonies that were more traditional, more “normal”.

What a surprise when they read through the pirate ceremony and then refused to even look at the others.  The look on their faces, the laughter and joy I saw, made my day.  The wedding went off perfectly, the groom in his finest pirate style tux, and she in a mermaid style gown, taking a pirate oath with their hands on a conch shell.  The group of people at the ceremony joined in by shouting “Arrrh!” at the appropriate times, and laughing at others.  A truly memorable and joyous wedding.

My goal when I work with you is to help you have a wedding that is what YOU want.  To create that special event that you will remember because it is a reflection of who you and your partner are.  So don’t be afraid to ask.  Don’t be afraid of different, or fun, or whatever, if it makes you happy.

Let’s have the wedding of your dreams!
